CA · 1986–present · active
Los Angeles grindcore band Terrorizer formed in 1986 around vocalist Oscar Garcia, guitarist Jesse Pintado, and drummer Pete Sandoval, recording their sole classic lineup album World Downfall in 1989 for Earache Records with Morbid Angel's David Vincent producing and playing bass. The album has since been recognized as a foundational text of grindcore, and the band briefly dissolved after Pintado joined Napalm Death and Sandoval returned to Morbid Angel. A reformed lineup released Darker Days Ahead in 2006, though the original lineup never reconvened.
Hendersonville, NC · 2009–present · active
Hendersonville, North Carolina's Terrorsaur have been playing heavy/thrash metal since 2009, rooted in the Appalachian foothills where a certain strain of hard, working-class metal has always thrived. They combine traditional heavy metal's melodic sense with the crunch and attack of thrash — a crowd-pleasing ferocity that doesn't sacrifice songwriting for aggression.
Norwalk, Whittier, CA · 2015–present · active
Coming out of the Norwalk/Whittier corridor in Los Angeles County, TerrorStorm have been running their black/thrash/speed metal assault since 2015, part of a thriving Southern California scene that has never stopped producing bands with this much raw velocity. They play with the reckless momentum of old Sodom and Bathory translated through the LA underground's obsession with analog aggression and total sonic attack.
Norfolk, VA · 2022–present · active
Norfolk, Virginia's Terrortoma arrived in 2022 with goregrind as their chosen weapon, the most medically specific corner of extreme metal and one that Norfolk's underground scene has rarely claimed for its own. They play with the requisite absurdist gore and blasting intensity the genre demands, but with the tightness of players who understand that speed requires discipline.
Milwaukee, WI · 2004–present · active
Milwaukee's Test-Site have been running their progressive stoner/sludge experiment since 2004, long enough to have become a genuine institution in the Midwest underground — a band that has refined its sound through years of playing in a city that respects musical seriousness. They fuse the mind-expanding drift of stoner metal with sludge's weight and progressive rock's structural ambition, creating something hypnotic and heavy in equal parts.
CA · 1983–present · active
Testament formed in Berkeley, California in 1983 under the name Legacy and adopted their current name before releasing The Legacy (1987), positioning them among the first wave of Bay Area thrash alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Exodus. Vocalist Chuck Billy — of Pomo Native American descent — joined in 1986 and has fronted the band through fifteen studio albums, including the acclaimed The New Order (1988), Practice What You Preach (1989), and the modern comeback Titans of Creation (2020). The band is considered part of the 'Big Eight' of thrash metal and has remained one of the genre's most active and consistent forces for over four decades.
GA · 2007–present · active
Tetrarch formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2007 when guitarists Diamond Rowe and Josh Fore began collaborating in middle school, evolving from a thrash-influenced early sound into a nu-metal and metalcore hybrid that helped drive the nu-metal revival of the late 2010s. Their 2017 debut full-length Freak, produced by Dave Otero, introduced polished production that balanced heavy riffing with melodic choruses, followed by Unstable (2021) and The Ugly Side of Me (2023). Diamond Rowe is among the few Black women to front a nationally recognized heavy metal act.
