Oakland's Thanatopsis carry a storied name — the 19th-century poem meditating on death — into a death/thrash sound that has evolved from progressive roots toward leaner, more aggressive territory since forming in 2020. The Bay Area's tradition of technically proficient thrash and death metal runs through their DNA, updated with the sharp-edged intensity of Oakland's current underground.
Formed in 2024, Thanatotherion are among the newest voices in black metal's ever-expanding underground, the name itself — Greek for "beast of death" — staking a claim to the darkest corners of the tradition. Their approach is rooted in orthodox black metal's cold grammar, built for listeners who want the atmosphere of the void without unnecessary embellishment.
Denver's Thanatotheristes take their name from an apex predatory theropod and bring corresponding ferocity to their brutal death metal since forming in 2021. Colorado's Mile High City has developed a serious underground extreme metal scene, and Thanatotheristes represent its most punishing register — low-tuned, blast-heavy, and anatomically precise in their brutality.
Oakland's Thane have been cultivating their death/doom sound since 2015, drawing on the Bay Area's tradition of heavy, serious metal and steering it into the slower, more oppressive corridors of the genre hybrid. Their music shares the grinding patience of classic death-doom — long songs, cavernous production, and a heaviness that accumulates with deliberate intent.
Tharnhul is a melodic black metal band from Nueva Braunau, in the Los Lagos region of southern Chile. Their 2025 debut album Forest That Devours The Light draws on the stories of indigenous peoples and pre-colonial deities of the Chilean south, with lyrics exploring the destruction wrought by colonialism and its cross.
