Poplarville, Mississippi's Riffer Madness have been slinging heavy/thrash metal from the Deep South since 2013, a region where the metal underground operates largely off the radar of the coasts but burns no less fiercely. Their sound draws a straight line to the riff-worship traditions of both classic heavy metal and the thrash genre — an approach rooted in the primacy of the guitar riff as the organizing unit of all meaningful metal music. Small-town Mississippi might seem an unlikely home for metal this earnest and loud, but Riffer Madness make it feel inevitable.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota's Rifflord have been immersed in the doom/stoner universe since 2015, building the kind of riff-centric, low-frequency heavy music that prioritizes crushing weight over technical complexity. South Dakota's vast, flat landscapes lend themselves naturally to slow, expansive music, and Rifflord's weed-scorched tempos and hazy guitar tones feel suited to long, empty stretches of prairie highway. They're a testament to the fact that America's forgotten middle can produce music as heavy and unhurried as anywhere else.
Formed in 2023 out of Lubbock, Texas, RigJaw brings a no-frills approach to groove metal rooted in the heavy-working, blue-collar energy of West Texas. Their sound leans on down-tuned riffs and punishing midtempo rhythms that hit like the oil fields the region is known for. A young band with momentum, they're one of the newer acts putting Lubbock on the map for heavy music.
Dallas thrash metal with blistering technical riffs. Mike Scaccia was one of Texas's greatest guitarists.
Long Island's Rigor Sardonicous occupies a particularly suffocating corner of extreme metal, blending funeral doom's glacial tempos with the rotting weight of death metal into something genuinely oppressive. Founded in 2009, the band strips away any trace of accessibility in favor of cavernous atmosphere and crushing, elongated compositions. Few acts in the funeral doom/death metal space commit so fully to the art of slow, deliberate destruction.
Salt Lake City's Riksha has been carving out a distinct space in the American heavy music landscape since 2011, fusing groove metal's rhythmic aggression with the compositional depth of progressive metal. The result is a sound that's simultaneously crushing and cerebral — dense, syncopated riff patterns set against dynamic song structures that reward repeated listening. They're among the more technically ambitious heavy acts to emerge from Utah's active underground.
Out of Lawrence, Kansas, Rimjob have been weaponizing the grindcore/death metal collision since 2016 with a relentless, economical brutality. Their songs are short, vicious, and deliberately stripped of any pretense — pure aggression delivered at maximum velocity. Despite operating in a college town better known for indie rock, they've built a reputation in underground extreme metal circles for uncompromising nastiness.
Ringing Bell emerged from Urbana, Illinois in 2024 as a new entry into the fertile American sludge/stoner/doom underground, layering tar-thick guitar tones over slow-burning, feedback-drenched compositions. Their sound sits at the intersection of psychedelic drift and heavy punishment — the kind of music that moves like molasses and hits like a wall. As a brand new band, they represent one of the freshest voices in the Midwest's heavy underground.
Crushing Technical Deathcore from Bay Area, California (early); Texas (later).
