Louisville's Mayhem has been fusing death and thrash metal since 1987, a full decade into the genre's formative years, making them one of Kentucky's longer-running extreme metal acts. Their Bandcamp presence keeps a low profile, but the longevity is undeniable.

Portland's Mayhem launched the same year as their Louisville namesake — 1987 — and has spent nearly four decades channeling heavy and thrash metal through the Pacific Northwest's dense, damp energy. They're a genuine relic of the pre-internet regional underground.

After leaving Underoath, Dallas Taylor formed Maylene and the Sons of Disaster to pursue a grittier blend of southern metal, hardcore, and outlaw country that owed as much to Lynyrd Skynyrd as it did to Norma Jean. Albums like 'II' and 'III' deliver whiskey-soaked riffs and Taylor's distinctive growl over a foundation of swaggering, dirty southern grooves.

Springfield, Massachusetts's Maze of Maze carves through the space between black and death metal with a relentless, disorienting intensity. Since 2017, they've built a sound that feels as claustrophobic as their name suggests.

Formed in St. Louis in 2021, MCF brings a lean, aggressive thrash attack to the Midwest with an ear for the classic Bay Area blueprint. Their sound is built on tight riff work and a no-frills urgency that cuts straight to the bone.
