Milford, Connecticut grindcore, hardcore punk, and powerviolence project. A trio of aggressive genres from small-town Connecticut.
Benümb were a grindcore and powerviolence band from the San Francisco Bay Area, formed in 1994 in Millbrae, California. Their debut full-length Soul of the Martyr (1998) was a chaotic and highly regarded document of the West Coast powerviolence scene, and the band maintained their intensity through Withering Strands of Hope (2000) and By Means of Upheaval (2003) on Relapse Records before disbanding in 2006. Several members went on to form Agenda of Swine.
Orlando thrash metal project from the Florida underground.
Dallas hardcore punk with death metal and powerviolence elements.
Absolutely punishing grindcore / powerviolence from Houston.
Noisy powerviolence from San Antonio.
Magrudergrind formed in Washington, DC in September 2002, building a relentless noise-core and grindcore attack from their early primitive demo phase through increasingly refined recordings. The band released a self-titled album on Willowtip Records in 2009 and followed it with II (2016) on Relapse Records, recorded with producer Kurt Ballou at Godcity Studio, which incorporated sharper thrash riffing alongside their characteristic blast-beat brutality. Now based in Brooklyn, the band has remained active through consistent lineup changes over more than two decades.
Trappist formed in California around 2014 as a collaborative project between Chris Dodge of Spazz and Infest, Phil Vera of Despise You and (16), and Ryan Harkins, initially as a two-piece before expanding. The band's entire thematic premise is craft beer culture, rendered through Discharge-influenced d-beat, crust punk, powerviolence, and hardcore played at punishing speeds. Their debut full-length Ancient Brewing Tactics (2018) comprised 21 tracks in 33 minutes and featured guest appearances from Tony Foresta of Municipal Waste and Steve Brooks of Torche. The project operates as a side outlet for members with extensive histories in the American hardcore underground.
Formed in DeKalb, Illinois in 2004, Weekend Nachos established themselves as one of the most uncompromising forces in American powerviolence, combining blast-beat ferocity with lurching sludge breakdowns and unflinching lyrical confrontation. After a debut full-length on Cowabunga Records, the band released four albums through Relapse Records — Unforgivable (2009), Worthless (2011), Still (2013), and the farewell Apology (2016) — before their 2017 retirement and eventual 2023 reunion. Their influence on the intersection of powerviolence and sludge has been substantial.
