Indianapolis sludge outfit Oxherder has been operating since 2010, drawing from the deep well of Southern-influenced sludge metal and distilling it through a Midwest sensibility. The name evokes the Zen ox-herding parables, and there is something meditative in their approach — a disciplined, grinding heaviness that punishes and focuses in equal measure.

Oxymorrons are a Queens band who push rap rock, punk, and alternative music into a deliberately hybrid identity. Built around brothers Demi and Kami and a full-band attack, the group developed a reputation for rejecting easy categorization, moving between hip-hop cadence, punk energy, heavy guitars, and arena-sized hooks. Releases leading up to Melanin Punk made the band's mission explicit: loud, Black, genre-fluid rock music that treats contradiction as a source of power rather than a marketing problem. Songs such as "Justice," "Green Vision," "Enemy," "Think Big," "Look Alive," and "Graveyard Words" show the group's mix of bounce, aggression, and social charge. Oxymorrons fit punk and metal-adjacent scope through their distorted guitar base, rap-rock intensity, and festival context alongside punk, hardcore, and alternative acts. The band is at its best when the music feels like pressure from multiple directions: shouted hooks, rhythmic vocal trades, low-end punch, and lyrics that turn exclusion into confrontation. Massachusetts-based Ozeki take their name from the second-highest rank in sumo, and their doom/sludge metal carries that same sense of deliberate, crushing mass. Formed in 2016, their songs move with the gravitational pull of something enormous — slow-rolling feedback, funeral tempos, and a weight that feels earned rather than imposed.

Thrash metal out of Burgettsville — a small town in rural Ohio — Ozmathoq have been proving since 2014 that geography is no obstacle when the riffs are right. Their approach is old-school and unrepentant: fast picking, aggressive vocals, and a commitment to the pit-tested mechanics of 1980s thrash that exists entirely outside the hype cycle.
