Oklahoma City, OK · 2012–present · active
Oklahoma City's Hills of Tyburn evoke the gallows grounds of old London in their name and bring a similarly dark, dramatic quality to their heavy and power metal. Since 2012, they've leaned into the theatrical sweep of the power metal tradition while keeping one foot planted in classic heavy metal firmness.
Minneapolis, MN · 2024–present · active
Minneapolis' Himmelschor — German for "heavenly choir" — bring gothic metal's orchestral melancholy and romantic darkness to a city not typically associated with the genre. The project, born in 2024, balances grandeur with the grim, inhabiting the same emotional space as a crumbling cathedral.
WA · 1998–present · active
Seattle metalcore band Himsa formed in 1998, taking their name from the Sanskrit word for harm or violence, and released four studio albums before disbanding in 2008. Produced during a period when the band relocated to Denmark, their 2005 album Hail Horror followed the well-received Courting Tragedy and Disaster (2003), and the band's final record Summon in Thunder was released through Century Media Records in 2007. A 2016 reunion brought them back to the stage, though no new recordings have followed.
Austin, TX · 2014–present · active
Melodic death/doom started as a one-man project by Casey Hurd. Signed to Napalm Records. Albums include Order Divine and Shatter And Fall.
Portland, OR · 2025–present · active
Portland's Hinterlands blend black metal with punk's stripped directness, arriving at something rawer and more physically immediate than pure black metal tends to be. A recent formation, they sound like they're more interested in communicating urgency than mastering the genre's intricacies.
Austin, TX · 2022–present · active
Solo project of Michael Anstice (keyboards in Hinayana). Gorilla riff death metal with releases Vices and Sins and Inferno.
Eugene, OR · 2019–present · active
The name alone announces Eugene, Oregon's Hippie Death Cult as a band with a sense of humor about the stoner doom genre they clearly love. Since 2019 they've delivered fuzz-caked, psychedelic doom that is simultaneously self-aware and genuinely heavy.
Calera, AL · 2019–present · active
Named for the Welsh concept of a longing for something irretrievably lost, Alabama's Hiraeth bring groove metal's propulsive rhythms and sludge's corrosive weight to bear on an emotional register that matches the word. Out of Calera since 2019, they hit hard and leave a mark.
TX · 2025–present · active
Devastating Black / Death Metal out of Texas.
