Progressive death metal from Dallas.
Charlotte, North Carolina's Salt Mine have been hauling their sludge metal sound out of the South since 2013, building tracks that move like heavy machinery — deliberate, punishing, and built on a foundation of low-tuned misery. The Carolinas have their own distinct sludge lineage and Salt Mine slot naturally into that tradition.
New York's Samoubiystvo — the name translating roughly to "suicide" in Russian — operates in the depressive black metal underground since 2024 with the solitary intensity the subgenre demands. The project works in darkness by design, crafting music that feels internal and desolate, built from raw black metal's most harrowing emotional register.
Long Island's Sanction have been merging heavy metal's melodic tradition with power metal's bombast and thrash metal's aggression since 2015, producing a sound that feels unmistakably East Coast in its directness. They're part of a New York metal lineage that values both impact and structure, balancing the visceral with the anthemic.
Asheville, North Carolina's Sanctity have pursued melodic thrash metal since 2020 with the kind of deliberate craft that sets them apart from pure aggression acts in the genre. Their Appalachian home gives the project a slightly isolated, self-reliant energy, and the melodic ambition they bring to thrash keeps their sound more dynamic than most.
Sanctuary is a heavy metal band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1985 by cousins and guitarists Lenny Rutledge and Sean Blosl, with vocalist Warrel Dane among its defining members. The band came to prominence when Dave Mustaine of Megadeth agreed to produce their debut, Refuge Denied (1988), which earned the band significant attention in the power and speed metal community. Their second album Into the Mirror Black (1990) pushed the band toward more progressive territory before label pressure to conform to grunge trends led to their 1992 dissolution; they reunited in 2010 and went on to record new material, though Dane's passing in 2017 cast a shadow over the band's legacy.
Crushing Heavy / Doom Metal from Houston.
Sanctus Mortum is a death metal band from Sibundoy, Putumayo, Colombia, formed in 2014 in the remote Andean-Amazon foothills. Drawing on the old-school traditions of black and death metal, they released the demo "Oscuridad Eterna" in 2015 and followed it with the live demo "Macabro" in 2021.
Reno, Nevada's SandVVitch arrived in 2025 armed with technical death metal's structural complexity and deathcore's visceral impact, assembling a sound that treats both subgenres as a single toolkit. The band's irreverent name belies music built on serious technical chops — dissonant, rhythmically unorthodox, and uninterested in playing it safe.
