Levittown, NY · 2006–present · active
Long Island's Mangled have been punishing listeners with brutal death metal since 2006, carrying on the New York area's tradition of uncompromising extremity without apology. Dense, technical, and brutally efficient.
Southington, CT · 2012–present · active
Connecticut's Maniac play stripped-back, aggressive thrash metal in the vein of the genre's most direct and savage forebears. Southington's small-town grit feeds into a sound that has no interest in polish or restraint.
Boston, MA · 2012–present · active
Boston's Maniac fuse thrash ferocity with speed metal's locomotive momentum, drawing from a city with a long underground pedigree to deliver something fierce and fast. Their approach leans into classic Bay Area and NWOBHM-adjacent energy filtered through a New England lens.
CT · 2016–present · active
Connecticut's Maniacal Violator have been carving out a niche in the black/death underground since 2016, blending the cold hostility of black metal with death metal's brute physicality. Raw, violent, and deliberately unpolished.
Austin, TX · 2024–present · active
Born out of Austin's fertile underground in 2024, Manic Lunacy take black metal's trademark chaos and channel it through an intensity that feels tightly wound even at its most ferocious. A young band operating in one of the country's most active extreme metal scenes.
Gary, IN · 2022–present · active
Gary, Indiana's Manifestations emerged in 2022 at the intersection of death metal and deathcore, reflecting a Rust Belt heaviness that comes through in every breakdown and blastbeat. The band draws from the surrounding region's working-class edge to fuel some genuinely punishing material.
Los Angeles, CA · 2009–present · active
Los Angeles' Manipulated Mutilation have occupied the brutal end of the death metal spectrum since 2009, blending slam's bone-snapping groove with the surgical extremity of technical deathcore. The result is visceral, precise, and entirely uncompromising.
Philadelphia, PA · 2010–present · active
Mannequin Pussy formed in Philadelphia in 2010 and built a catalog around speed, vulnerability, distortion, and sharp melodic turns. Early records leaned into brief, blown-out punk songs, but the band quickly developed a wider emotional range, moving from hardcore bursts and noise-rock abrasion into dreamy indie passages and hook-driven alternative rock. Romantic and Patience showed how forcefully the group could pivot between fury and tenderness, often within a single track, with Marisa Dabice's voice moving from intimate melodic phrasing to full-throated screams. Perfect and I Got Heaven continued that expansion, pairing bigger production with more direct songwriting while keeping the volatility that made the band stand out in the first place. Their history is one of refinement without softening: the songs became more spacious and melodic, but the core remains rooted in punk compression, cathartic release, jagged guitar texture, and lyrics that treat desire, anger, grief, self-possession, and bodily urgency as inseparable forces. The heaviness comes from emotional velocity as much as volume, especially when a hook collapses into a scream.
CA · 2000–present · active
Manntis formed in Riverside County, California in 2000 and gained wider exposure in 2004 as contestants on MTV's Battle for Ozzfest, a platform that led directly to a worldwide deal with Century Media Records. The band's debut album Sleep in Your Grave was released in June 2005, featuring a melodic metalcore sound that positioned them alongside the mid-2000s Southern California heavy scene. Despite plans for a follow-up album, no further full-length materialized, leaving Sleep in Your Grave as their sole major label statement.
