Diamond Plate is a thrash metal band from Worth, Illinois, formed in 2004 while its members were still in high school. The trio — guitarist Konrad Kupiec, vocalist/bassist Jon Macak, and drummer James Nicademus — released the Mountains of Madness EP in 2008 when the average member age was 15, earning early support slots for Behemoth, Gojira, and Exodus. Their Earache Records debut Generation Why? followed in 2011, produced by Neil Kernon, and a second album Pulse arrived via Century Media/Earache in 2013 with a more jam-oriented approach.
Santa Cruz, California's Drain burst onto the hardcore scene with a ferocious blend of crossover thrash, skate punk energy, and hardcore punk attitude. Their debut 'California Cursed' became an instant classic of the modern hardcore revival, driven by Sammy Ciaramitaro's snarling vocals and riffs that recall DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, and Municipal Waste. The band's skater aesthetic and party-thrash approach have made them one of the most exciting live acts in contemporary hardcore.
Exodus are founding fathers of Bay Area thrash metal, formed in Richmond, California in 1979, with guitarist Gary Holt serving as the band's creative backbone for over four decades. 'Bonded by Blood' stands as one of thrash metal's sacred texts, and subsequent albums like 'Tempo of the Damned' and 'Blood In Blood Out' prove they never lost the fury. Their legendary live intensity and Holt's incendiary riff writing have kept Exodus relevant through every shift in the metal landscape.
Founded in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1997 by guitarist Sammy Duet, formerly of sludge metal pioneers Acid Bath, Goatwhore have built one of the most consistent bodies of work in American blackened death metal over more than two decades. Albums like Carving Out the Eyes of God (2009) and Blood for the Master (2012) on Metal Blade Records cemented their reputation for relentless, riff-driven extremity with a distinctly Southern character. Their satanic lyrical themes and high-output touring schedule have made them a fixture of the underground metal circuit.
GWAR are the most gloriously absurd spectacle in heavy metal history, forming in Richmond, Virginia in 1984 as interplanetary warriors sent to Earth to enslave humanity through barbaric thrash metal and grotesque stage shows. Their concerts, featuring elaborate alien costumes, fake blood cannons, and the ritualistic dismemberment of celebrity effigies, are legendary performance-art happenings. Beneath the chaos, albums like 'Scumdogs of the Universe' and 'Lust in Space' deliver surprisingly solid thrash and punk that justifies the spectacle.
Helsott bring pagan and folk metal traditions to the American Southwest from their base in Menifee, California, fusing Old Norse mythology with thrash and death metal aggression since 2010. Their name, Old Norse for 'fatal illness,' reflects the band's commitment to combining ancient pagan themes with distinctly American metal sensibilities. The result is a unique take on folk metal that pays homage to European traditions while keeping its boots firmly planted in American thrash.
Named after the ancient Egyptian city discovered underwater in 2000, Herakleion is a death-thrash trio from New Orleans formed in 2021. Guitarist/vocalist Apollo Xydias, drummer Speed Wilson, and bassist Christian Woerner channel the city's heavy music legacy through a prism of thrash and death metal aggression. Their debut EP 'Curse of Eternity' and follow-up 'Necroverse' capture the raw intensity of a band steeped in New Orleans' tradition of punishing, swamp-bred heaviness.
Intoxicated formed in Florida in the early 1990s and came out of the same state whose death metal history gave heavy music some of its most violent foundations. The band began as a thrash metal act, releasing several EPs through the mid-1990s before entering a long quiet period. Their return in the 2020s repositioned Intoxicated as a sharper death/thrash band, still rooted in speed and crossover aggression but heavier, nastier, and more in line with old-school Florida extremity. The Walled EP signaled the comeback, while Watch You Burn delivered a full-length blast of compact, riff-heavy metal with songs such as "Assholian Mode," "Grovel," "Revelation Denied," and the title track. The album's sound is raw but not careless, drawing from Kreator, Death, Obituary, Municipal Waste-style crossover energy, and classic speed metal. Intoxicated's appeal is in the collision of eras: early thrash attitude, death metal grime, punky momentum, and the feeling of musicians returning to unfinished business with more force than nostalgia.
Iron Reagan is the crossover thrash supergroup formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2012, featuring Municipal Waste vocalist Tony Foresta and members of Darkest Hour, Cannabis Corpse, and other Richmond heavy hitters. Their music is a furious, lightning-fast tribute to '80s crossover thrash and hardcore punk, delivered with the tongue-in-cheek humor of bands like D.R.I. and Suicidal Tendencies. Albums like 'Worse Than Dead' and 'Crossover Ministry' are pure adrenaline rushes, rarely letting a song exceed two minutes.
