Out of Philadelphia, Returner emerged in 2024 blending the surgical riff construction of progressive death metal with the adrenaline-soaked tempos of thrash. Their approach is relentless but not brainless — technical passages weave through aggressive breakdowns, giving the music a cerebral tension that sets them apart from more straightforward death-thrash acts. Still freshly formed, they represent the Philly underground's hunger for complexity without sacrificing ferocity.

Sunol, California's Reverted have been pursuing no-frills death metal since 2011, operating out of the East Bay's unpretentious underground with a sound that favors density and heaviness over technical showmanship. Their approach is old-school at its core — crushing, mid-paced death metal with enough groove to keep the head moving and enough filth to satisfy death metal purists. Fifteen years of activity have sharpened their approach to a brutal point.

Seattle's Reviled have been fusing black and death metal into something caustic and extreme since 2017, drawing on both traditions without fully surrendering to either. The black/death combination gives their music a fevered quality — the atmospheric menace of black metal colliding with death metal's sheer physical force — and Seattle's grey, rain-soaked environment seems like a fitting birthplace for something this unrelenting. Long Island's Rigor Sardonicous occupies a particularly suffocating corner of extreme metal, blending funeral doom's glacial tempos with the rotting weight of death metal into something genuinely oppressive. Founded in 2009, the band strips away any trace of accessibility in favor of cavernous atmosphere and crushing, elongated compositions. Few acts in the funeral doom/death metal space commit so fully to the art of slow, deliberate destruction.

Out of Lawrence, Kansas, Rimjob have been weaponizing the grindcore/death metal collision since 2016 with a relentless, economical brutality. Their songs are short, vicious, and deliberately stripped of any pretense — pure aggression delivered at maximum velocity. Despite operating in a college town better known for indie rock, they've built a reputation in underground extreme metal circles for uncompromising nastiness.
