Karl Sanders, founding guitarist and primary songwriter of Egyptian-themed death metal institution Nile, launched his solo ambient project in 2004 with Saurian Meditation on Relapse Records. Departing entirely from Nile's sonic brutality, the Saurian series trades guitar distortion for acoustic strings, oud, saz, bendir, and ney flute, constructing meditative soundscapes steeped in ancient Egyptian and reptilian mysticism. A second volume, Saurian Exorcisms, followed in 2009, and after a thirteen-year gap Sanders returned with Saurian Apocalypse in 2022 via Napalm Records.

Midwife is the solo project of Madeline Johnston, initially developed within Denver, Colorado's DIY community around 2017. Johnston's sound — which she calls "heaven metal" — layers minimalist guitar, vocals, and ambient textures to create slowcore and shoegaze-inflected meditations on grief and loss. Albums including Forever (2020) and Luminol (2021) have earned her critical acclaim for their quiet emotional intensity.

San Diego multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle launched The Album Leaf in 1998 as a solo project while playing guitar in post-rock band Tristeza, initially self-releasing limited cassette experiments in ambient texture and field recordings. The project gained international recognition after Sigur Rós took LaValle on tour, leading to the acclaimed Sub Pop release In a Safe Place (2004), a landmark of delicate, orchestrated instrumental ambient music. LaValle has continued releasing records under the name, expanding the project to include a full live band and occasional vocals.

The Soil Bleeds Black was formed in Ashburn, Virginia in 1992 as a project by twin brothers Mark and Michael Riddick, operating in the neofolk and dark ambient space with a distinctive medieval influence. Drawing on harp, cello, ethnic instruments, and atmospheric production, the project explored themes of paganism, mythology, and archaic European folk traditions across albums including The Kingdom & Its Fey, March of the Infidels, and Alchemie. After a long hiatus, the brothers returned with Medieval, recorded over seven years and conceived to evoke the sensation of live performance in a grand medieval hall. Their work sits at the intersection of neofolk, dungeon synth, and dark folk.
