D.R.I., short for Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, formed in Houston in 1982 and became one of the crucial bands in the creation of crossover thrash. The early lineup of Kurt Brecht, Spike Cassidy, Eric Brecht, and Dennis Johnson emerged from hardcore punk, practicing obsessively and recording music that was faster, rougher, and more compressed than most rock of the time. Santa Cruz, California's Drain burst onto the hardcore scene with a ferocious blend of crossover thrash, skate punk energy, and hardcore punk attitude.
