Violent Femmes are a Milwaukee band whose acoustic instrumentation, nervous vocals, and raw lyrical candor helped create one of the most recognizable forms of American folk punk and alternative rock. Formed in 1980 by Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie, and Victor DeLorenzo, the group broke through with its self-titled 1983 debut, an album that turned teenage frustration, sexual anxiety, religious unease, and deadpan humor into songs that sounded both homemade and unforgettable. Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone, and Please Do Not Go became staples because they felt immediate, awkward, and communal at once.
