Philadelphia death metal band Horrendous formed in 2009 out of a shared obsession with classic death metal from both sides of the Atlantic and have since evolved into one of the most critically acclaimed acts in progressive death metal. Their debut The Chills (2012) established the band's old-school foundation, while Ecdysis (2014), Anareta (2015), and Idol (2018) demonstrated increasing compositional ambition. Ontological Mysterium (2023), released through Season of Mist, was named Decibel Magazine's album of the year, cementing the band's position at the forefront of modern death metal.
John Frum is a progressive death metal band from Philadelphia formed in 2011, featuring Liam Wilson (The Dillinger Escape Plan) on bass, Derek Rydquist (The Faceless) on vocals, and guitarist Matt Hollenberg. Their 2017 Relapse Records debut A Stirring in the Noos delivered 40 minutes of psychedelic, darkly atmospheric death metal that drew on the members' backgrounds in some of American extreme music's most demanding bands.
