Brand new as of 2025, Concord, California's WinterSorrow arrive with gothic metal drama wrapped in symphonic grandeur — a style that draws on the full orchestral palette to frame heavy metal beneath layers of atmosphere and dark romance. It's early days, but the symphonic gothic metal form has a devoted audience, and WinterSorrow are already building within its most expressive traditions.

Chicago's Withering Soul are a long-running project that has shifted over its lifespan from black/gothic metal into melodic black metal territory — a natural evolution that has added melodic sophistication without blunting their darker instincts. Formed in 2011, they have had over a decade to develop their sound and build a foothold in Chicago's diverse and serious metal underground. Their later melodic black metal direction places them alongside acts like Dissection and Naglfar in their harmonic ambitions.
